Ouarzazate

ABOUT OUARZAZATE

Want to discover Ouarzazate? There are a thousand and one ways to do so. The Hollywood of Morocco is a caramel-coloured oasis highlighted by the cloudless blue of the North African sky with its innumerable adobe Kasbahs, arid mountains and plains, green valleys and oases, palm groves and villages of red or ochre earth which make the charm of this region and give it its tourist appeal.
The symbol of the city is the Taourirt Kasbah which belonged to the Glaoui. It was built around the middle of the 18th century. It is represented in the new 50-dirham banknotes and adjoins the medina.
This Moroccan city located at the meeting of the Ouarzazate and Dades river valleys (from the High Atlas) which form the Draa river downstream from their convergence, is the nerve centre of a vast region of southern Morocco.
Ouarzazate bestrides both the southern foothills of the High Atlas and the nearby desert with a population of 100,000.
On the threshold of the deep south of the kingdom Ouarzazate appears as a striking mixture of oases, Kasbahs and flourishing valleys and a vast desert plateau that attract tourists of different nationalities to discover the natural beauty of this city.
Its Kasbahs are classified as heritage sites and some have been transformed into tourist residences.
The city of Ouarzazate is also experiencing a boom in tourism and cinematography. Ouarzazate has an international airport and is accessible by road from Marrakech.
It is one of the most popular Moroccan sites for film directors from around the world. Apart from the landscapes, one of the cinematographic assets of this place is the quality of the light, with a bright sun for 300 days a year on average.
